Samsung Odyssey G9 Review
Although the Samsung Odyssey G9 boasts a VA panel, its contrast ratio is merely adequate, making dark blacks appear yellowish. It’s only a tad slower than the promised 2500:1; however, individual units may differ. In SDR, local dimming seems to have little effect, as the contrast remains nearly unchanged.
With local dimming enabled in HDR, however, it’s significantly lower, as the significant vertical dimming zones also light up the black squares in our test pattern, lowering the contrast to 446:1. The contrast is predicted to decrease when local dimming is enabled in regular content.
The high refresh rate of the Samsung Odyssey G9 ensures a fluid and responsive gaming experience. It has G-SYNC compatibility and supports FreeSync. However, there are certain limits.
Over HDMI, the maximum refresh rate is limited to 60Hz, and VRR is not supported. Only graphics cards with the Display Stream Compression (DSC) functionality, such as NVIDIA RTX 20-Series cards and AMD 5300 or newer, can support 240Hz over DisplayPort.
It should work with NVIDIA 30-series cards, but there are issues with the drivers, so once a firmware update is released, we’ll retest it. We can only get a maximum of 120Hz with our Radeon graphics card. When VRR is used, there have been instances of image flickering.
